Did anyone else have a 6 month mental breakdown???
Ok, so I have just been really out of sorts lately and I did something today that was so out of character that my friend even said, that she is worried about a chemical imbalance. Did anyone else "loose it" at 6 months?
I am so worried, that I'm making an appt with my PCP who perscribes my proztac and then even have called my insurance about psychologist. They have given me three names in my area which are covered under my insurance and the first 6 visits are free.. hopefully that will "fix" me!
I don't want to worry anyone who is 'newer' than me, chances are you are not going to "loose it" at 6 months, I had chemical imbalances prior to surgery so I am wondering if the new me is bring up old issues?
I'll keep ya'll informed but if someone else has gone through this would you please pass some words of wisdom my way...
NOW.. this was NOT meant to worry any of ya'll, I'll be fine, I will get help, and I will keep up with the June Bugs!!!

Amy: I've scanned the book I mentioned in the other thread, "The Emotional First Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery" by Cynthia Alexander. I got it from Amazon. I think it's going to be very useful. (Sorry I don't remember the cost.) I was in counsleing for over a year before my surgery and still see my conselor. I'm also on Prozac. Since I've had these challenges for most of my adult life, I really don't know how much of it is related to WLS surgery. Yet, I know this is somewhat different from my usual state of mental health.
In March, when I was 6 month out, a dear friend died. I knew she was terminal. I do believe I'll see her again in an Afterlife. Yet her death hit me in way like none other including my parents and grandparents. Last Friday I went to our Relay for Life event. They had luminarias with her name on them. Just seeing them caused me great physical pain as well as emotional pain.
I'm very happy to see you reaching out and getting help. We did so for our weight; why not for our mental health? Maybe this can be a topic for the support group meeting on the 10th.

Thank you so much!!! You are so right, about reaching out, but you know, it wasn't until I almost lost my best friends because of me and what happened, that I realized how out of sorts I am, I got scared!!
I agree and maybe by the 10th, I'll have some hope for answers!
HUGS to you!! and hopes for all of us!!

Good for you Amy! Seeking help when you feel this way is always a good thing!
You've probably heard this a thousand times already, but..."They didn't operate on my head, they only did my stomach!" But oh how true!
Shoot girl, I went to support group last night and found out that I wasn't the only one feeling like this! And I'm 17 months out!
Hang in there, things will get better June Bug!

Thank you so much Scott!!! I think it has been a wake up call to get something done.. I usually don't like posting "issues" cause I don't want to sound negative, but then I thought of what I tell my students, no questions or concern is a dumb one, cause someone out there might have the same one and not be voicing it either....
This is too important to me not to ask, because we all need to know, it is only a short way from our stomachs to our heads and they are both contained in the same body and both need taken care of.
OK, I'm off my soap box, I'm excited to find answers and hope the wait for the psy appt isn't too long!
Sorry, rambling...
I'm tying a knot in my rope and hanging on for with everything I got!!!!

Thank you, Melinda!!! You know I didn't think about it, until I read your post, but no one asks "how are you?" that knows me and knows about my WLS, their first question is usually, "so how much weight have you lost?"
It is a HUGE MENTAL battle, and one that I plan on adding to my army of professionals to help me win the battle and the war!!!
Thank you so much for your words, they helped out a great deal!!

Hi, Amy. I'm not 6 months out yet but having a breakdown was one of my fears for after surgery because of my mental health history. I have schizoaffective disorder, which means I'm both schizophrenic and bipolar. I was really concerned about what would happen with the malabsorption. I have needed to adjust my meds since surgery but they seem to be working well. I know that prozac is one of the drugs that doesn't usually work as well after surgery. It usually requires an increased dosage. As my weight has come off though, it seems that the dosage I was on began to work too well in my case. I was starting to get a little manic and was having sexual side effects that usually happen to me only when on much higher doses. So my psych cut my dose down to 10 mgs. I am doing great with this dose and feel better than I have in a long time. Talk with your doc about adjusting your dose. Also, do you have a counselor to help talk you through the rough times? I started back in therapy a few months before surgery and it has been a wonderful help to me. My husband is going through a depression in recent months and having some one to talk to about the stresses at home has been invaluable to me. If you have access to a good therapist, I highly recommend it. I will be losing mine soon because of my insurance issues but my new insurance will pay for therapy. Unfortunately, I will just have to start over with a new one.
I wish you the best. Hang in there. I know things will look better soon.
